SRA Receives Two 2023 Orchid Awards

San Elijo Lagoon Pedestrian Bridge

Safdie Rabines Architects has received “Orchids” for two recently completed projects, the San Elijo Lagoon Pedestrian Bridge and the Epstein Family Amphitheater at UC San Diego. Both structures received awards in the Public Architecture category, and were acknowledged during last Thursday’s annual Orchids & Onions event, one of San Diego’s most prominent design and architecture awards ceremonies.

The San Elijo Lagoon Pedestrian Bridge, completed in June 2022, spans a protected lagoon between Encinitas and Cardiff and provides increased pedestrian access to several favorite shoreline trails, including popular Annie’s Canyon and trails within the San Elijo Lagoon and Wildlife Ecological Reserve. This project is part of the North Coast Corridor Program to improve overall mobility along the 27-mile corridor from La Jolla to Oceanside.

Epstein Family Amphitheater, opened in October 2022, is a versatile performance venue at a gateway to UC San Diego’s campus. Together with the extension of the Mid-Coast Trolley line to UC San Diego, this 2,650-seat amphitheater creates an inclusive, park-like space in which numerous outdoor concerts and events have taken place. In addition to a custom-designed audio system and uniquely shaped stage canopy, this project also includes an 800-foot-long engraved stone pathway featuring the writing of authors and scholars with ties to the university as well as an indigenous Kumeyaay narrative.
