Scripps Seaside Forum

With Scripps Institute of Oceanography’s global approach to oceanographic research and its impact on the environment, the Seaside Forum serves as an important physical location for leading researchers from around the world to gather in. Located on the beach with strong winds, western sun, and an existing grove of palms, the Forum’s design responds to its unique and dramatic location while shielding guests from the elements and framing views of the ever-changing ocean. The project includes a flexible auditorium, four meeting rooms, a student lounge, a catering kitchen, and a rooftop restaurant. The facility is divided into several small, village-like structures linked by a trellis, creating a porous design that maintains public access and views of the ocean. The auditorium is tucked into the hillside to minimize its mass from the east, allowing for gentle ramps to access roof terraces. A series of large pocketing doors between the auditorium, lobby, and oceanfront terrace allow the main space to accommodate a wide variety of functions while simultaneously maximizing ocean views.
