Mercado del Barrio

Mercado del Barrio is in the heart of San Diego’s culturally-rich Barrio Logan district, and responds to the community’s objectives through a design that honors the neighborhood’s history while creating local business opportunities and promoting the arts.
The mixed-use project incorporates affordable housing with a community center, retail spaces, a supermarket and public plazas. Additional goals of this infill project included the fostering of a sense of place with the unobtrusive integration of The Mercado into the community. The physical expression of this vision consists of architectural forms familiar in Latino cultures; courtyards, terraces, arcades, walls, and arches frame the spaces, weaving together interior and exterior activities.
