Celebrating the Opening of Lusail Pedestrian Bridges in Qatar

This January, web traffic to SafdieRabines.com rocketed to new levels. We were surprised – and quickly discovered the reason: the opening of our project Lusail Pedestrian Bridges in Qatar, and an abundance of photos and videos posted to social media as people visited the intricate bridges for the first time.

This project, which began as an international design competition, involved an exploration of the City of Lusail’s theme, “Water is Life.” This led to the concept of a delicate necklace draped along the ring of the Qetaifan Island Marina. The curvature of these bridges follows along the island’s waterfront, while intertwined walkways weave across the channel creating a chain, its links supported by stainless steel cables affixed to two concrete pylons.

Now open, the Lusail Pedestrian Bridges are visited daily by locals and tourists from far-flung locales. Their distinct design beside the water invites the public to stroll, explore, and capture photographs – and it comes as no surprise that we love seeing people using and enjoying our designs; in this case, one-of-a-kind structures that will define the city’s waterfront for years to come.View the Lusail Pedestrian Bridges here.
