Celebrating a Milestone: a Topping-Off Ceremony for 222 North City

The City of San Marcos, a growing urban area near San Diego, is one step closer to receiving its tallest building to date. On November 8, mixed-use project 222 North City in San Marcos’ downtown district reached completion of its structural phase of construction, and the project team marked this occasion with a time-honored tradition: a Topping-Off Ceremony.

Topping-Off Ceremonies date back for centuries, with roots in Scandinavian and Northern European customs. During these events a tree is placed at the highest point of a building, symbolizing respect for the land. Over time, this tradition has evolved into a meaningful celebration in modern architecture, honoring construction milestones and teamwork.

222 North City’s Topping-Off Ceremony was filled with camaraderie as our project team came together to celebrate everyone’s efforts in bringing this design to life. The building’s final beam was signed by the team, including SRA, as a symbol of each individuals’ lasting impact on this project. A cake designed to resemble 222 North City added a sweet touch!

This occasion wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and collaboration of everyone involved in 222 North City. Together, we’re building a structure—and shaping the future of San Marcos with innovative urban development.

What’s Next for 222 North City?

When complete, 222 North City will be the tallest building in San Marcos and the newest market-rate housing in North City, a downtown district master planned by SRA in 2008. This mixed-use project will offer 400+ housing units, resident amenities including a pool deck with cabanas and lush gardens, vibrant retail spaces, and underground parking.
